tapes of the Center for Military History: William Middleton

Updated October 25, 2008

Now you can listen to an interview on December 12, 2001 William Middleton (aka Neito 427), an employee of the cemetery in Arlington that we have already had to deal with.

William Middleton describes the details of the approach of the plane to Sergeant Marc Martini

As with Prather, the assignment of the identity of the witness (remember, in interviews with the Center for Military History are omitted the names of witnesses) was made possible through cross-checked with other documents note: an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette of 16 December 2001 and especially the documentary The North Side Flyover of July 2008. The timbre of the voice, the notes of color, location of sighting, and numerous other details leading to a total match with the witness William Middleton.

Middleton, as dozens of other witnesses, describes the same approach more clearly to the north of the route described in official documents and in this case, the testimony provided has not undergone substantial changes, even at 7 years away.

La trascrizione parziale dell'intervista del dicembre 2001:
Middleton: I started off picking up the trash. Once I got finished with the trash around, at 8:30-8:45 I picked up my sweeper [INAUDIBLE] on one of the drives we have we call Patton Drive. As I made a turn to come back I heard this whistling noise and was coming behind me. So when I turned to look I seen this big large airplane besides me. [...]

"Weeeeeuuuu", and when I looked I seen the plane besides me. I said "where is it going?". He was kinda fighting with the plane and he rushed over [??] like our parking lot here and made a turn towards the Pentagon [...].

CMH officer: Then he went into the Pentagon...?

Middleton: Seen the first explosion, which was a terrible light explosion, and I guess the next explosion I hear must have been when the fuel ignited because was a tremendous explosion. It rocked this place. [...]

Quite few of our fellows were standing at the back gate because they seen the plane circling. I didn't seen the plane circling but they seen it circling when it came around past the Navy Annex, it came right down the [INAUDIBLE] road here. And like I said when you hear that sound I just... "what the hell is he doing?". [...]

CMH officer: How Was The plane high in your estimate?

Middleton: I would say the plane Could not Be No More Than 40 feet up in the air.

CMH officer: So Was this plane roughly telephone poles ...

Middleton: Telephone poles high.
Translation:
Middleton: I started collecting the garbage. Once finished with the garbage, I moved to the 8:30 to 8:45 in one of the internal streets that we have called Patton Drive. As I turned around to go back I heard this hissing noise behind me. So when I turned to look I saw this great plane next to me. [...]

"Weeeeeuuuu and quando ho guardato ho detto "dove sta andando?".

And like I said when I heard this noise I said to myself "Where the hell are you going?".
[...] [Note: This portion of the interview, although not very clear, belies the declaration of June 2008 in Middleton where he said he saw the plane fly in circles a few minutes before the explosion at the Pentagon ]

Official CMH: How high was the plane in your estimation?

Middleton: I would say that the plane could not be more than 40 feet from the ground.

Official CMH: So this plane was more or less at the telephone poles ...

Middleton: At the height of telephone poles.
